Energy Informatics 2022 -- Call for Papers

Countries worldwide have strengthened their commitment to decarbonize the energy system at COP26 in Glasgow. This intent necessitates a massive increase in renewable power generation and the electrification of energy demand through sector coupling (e.g., heat and mobility). Over the last year, for example, the DACH countries have created roadmaps to establish hydrogen as an additional sustainable energy carrier. Energy informatics contributes to solving many of the challenges of this energy transition, by connecting various decentralized resources and by operating them intelligently.

The objective of the DACH+ conference series on Energy Informatics is to promote research, development, and implementation of information and communication technologies in the energy domain and to foster the exchange between academia, industry, and service providers in the German-Austrian-Swiss region and its neighbouring countries (DACH+).

Call for Papers on Optimization of Photovoltaic Power Systems

The Hindawi Jounral of Engineering is publishing a special issue on optimization of photovoltaic power systems. Journal of Engineering is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles as well as review articles in several areas of engineering.

PV generation system is one of the most popular uses of direct solar energy and its installation is rapidly growing because it is considered as a clean and environmentally friendly source of energy. The primary obstacle to increased use of PV systems is their high initial cost. Currently, many research works are carried out focusing on optimization of PV systems in order to reduce the capital cost of the PV system without affecting its reliability. The optimization of a PV system means that the system parameters such as number of PV modules, capacity of storage battery, capacity of inverter, and PV array tilt angle must be selected optimally. In addition, diesel generator and wind turbine capacities must be optimized in case of hybrid PV systems. Moreover, the optimization term includes the electronic features that maximize the yield of these systems such as sun trackers, MPPT, and smart inverters.

This special issue aims to discuss the recent developed and contribution of photovoltaic system optimization science.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Modeling and characterization of photovoltaic systems

Call for Papers 1st Workshop on Middleware for a Smarter Use of Electric Energy

CALL FOR PAPERS

MidSEE 2015

1st Workshop on Middleware for a Smarter Use of Electric Energy

in conjunction with NetSys 2015, Cottbus, Germany

MOTIVATION & WORKSHOP SCOPE

Smart energy meters are increasingly installed in newly constructed buildings worldwide, as regulated by, e.g., the European Union's Energy Services Directive. Their combination with the vision of an Internet of Things, in which billions of embedded devices will continually monitor the environment, enables the fine-grained monitoring of household and office energy usage and hence a large range of novel services. While many such functions have been devised so far (e.g., advice how to save energy or the disaggregation of electricity bills), these solutions commonly rely on the availability of hard- and software systems by a single manufacturer. Interoperability, including the potential to integrate new energy metering devices, is mostly unsupported due to the wide variety of (non-compatible) standards and communication protocols.

This workshop provides a platform to present current research activities in communications and processing of energy consumption data, with its primary focus on electric energy usage. The scope of the workshop includes contributions that address the integration of energy metering equipment from different manufacturers into a single middleware system which operates on a building level, as well as novel means to collect, process and visualize these data. Accepted papers will not only present novel research results in these domains, but also comprise an evaluation in which their merits are assessed.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Novel energy metering hardware designs and experiences
  • Data collection and command distribution protocols for energy  management systems
  • Middleware systems for energy data, including novel local data processing algorithms
  • Control of alternative energy sources to increase their production efficiency
  • Innovative tools to model and visualize energy expenditure and production
  • Sensing and actuation of electrical loads
  • Privacy and security in energy management middleware systems
  • User interfaces for energy display, management and control

PAPER SUBMISSION

Authors are invited to submit papers of up to 6 pages in IEEE two-column format. Submissions must be original and should not have been published previously or be under consideration for publication while being evaluated for this workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. More details about the ubmission process can be found on the website.

Energy Aware Software-Engineering and Development (EASED@BUIS)

2. Workshop on Energy Aware Software-Engineering and Development (EASED@BUIS)

25.04.2013
Oldenburg (Oldb.)
Kulturzentrum PFL
Peterstraße 3

The EASED workshop will be held in conjunction with the 5th BUIS-Days: IT-based resource and energy management.
Utilization of mobile and embedded devices, and thus their induced energy consumption, is constantly increasing. Reducing the energy consumption of such devices will not only improve the carbon footprint of contemporary mobile IT usage, but will also extend the device lifetime, improve user acceptance and reduce operational costs.
Next to serious and ongoing efforts in hardware design and on operating system level, software engineering techniques will also contribute to optimize energy consumption by improving software design and software quality. The EASED@BUIS workshop, which follows up the Workshop on Developing Energy Aware Software Systems (EEbS 2012), held at the annual GI Conference in September 2012, provides a broad forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss ongoing works, latest results, and common topics of interest regarding the improvement of software induced energy consumption.
Intensive discussions at the first workshop identified a major challenge in optimizing energy efficiency, which is to precisely measure energy consumption of software regarding user behavior.
Thus, the follow workshop EASED@BUIS will focus on the following topics:
  • approaches and techniques to estimate or measure the energy consumption of software components,
  • approaches to define standardized usage scenarios of applications on mobile devices to provide repeatable measurement of energy consumption in concrete application settings,
  • approaches to model the energy consumption of software components, and
  • experiences on measuring and improving the energy consumption of software components.
Well elaborated and standardized measurement means will provide an important foundation to detecting sources of wasting energy caused by software systems and will enable validation means to verify energy savings by software improvements.
EASED@BUIS will be organized as a one day discussion-intensive workshop to provoke intensive collaborations among the participants. It is intended to initiate collaborative works on standardizing (static and dynamic) measuring techniques for energy consumption.
To further stimulate these discussions, authors are invited to submit position papers one on the        workshop´s topics. Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop and will be published in Softwaretechnik-Trends.
EASED@BUIS is supported by the GI special Interest groups Software Technology and Environmental Informatics.

Workshop on Modeling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Energy Systems 2013

Workshop on Modeling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Energy Systems 2013
May 20 2013, Berkeley CA

Modern energy systems combine information technology, electrical and thermal infrastructure, autonomous roles and interact with other systems like markets and regulations. Existing modeling and simulation tools are not capable to cover such systems in all of their aspects, new languages, methods and tools are necessary. A combination of universal modeling languages like Modelica and established, specialized tools like grid simulators and telecommunication simulators is necessary. This leads to modeling and co-simulating hybrid systems where for instance a multi-agent framework and an electric grid simulator are combined to investigate smart electric vehicle charging algorithms. It is especially the potential size of such systems that constitute a challenge for modeling and simulation. Implementing these future CPS are another substantial challenge. The designed algorithms need to be compact, computationally inexpensive, potentially self-organizing and intrinsically stable if applied to real energy systems. New methods and alternative ways are necessary to overcome these challenges.

This workshop is a platform for researchers and developers to exchange ideas to the following (not exhaustive) list of topics:

-    Hybrid modeling and simulation
-    Co-Simulation
-    High-performance computing
-    Analytics of system data
-    Ontologies for energy systems
-    Applications of cyber-physical energy systems
-    Distributed algorithms and control
-    Standards in interfacing components
-    Numerics for hybrid and co-simulation
-    Formal languages for energy systems
-    Smart Grid modeling
-    Demand response and power quality
-    Information and communication technology for intelligent energy systems

CfP: IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid Engineering (SGE’12)

27-29 August, 2012

University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT)
2000 Simcoe St. N.
Oshawa, ON, L1H 7K4

The Smart Grids are electricity networks that promise to enhance the operational efficiency of nationwide power supply via distributed generation with bi-directional electricity flow. This objective is achieved by allowing intelligent monitoring and control of different components within the distribution and transmission lines as well as other systems from utilities on one side to the end user on the other side, while maintain the power quality, security, reliability and safety with minimum environmental impacts. Governments around the world are investing heavily in this technology to ensure optimum energy use and supply, enable better planning for outage responses and recovery, and facilitate the integration of heterogeneous technologies around the grid, such as renewable energy systems, electrical vehicle networks, and smart homes. Smart Grids present enormous engineering challenges in the design and integration of electrical grid with communication and network technologies, along with substantial questions around required security and privacy of different components within the grid. The SGE’12 conference aims to provide an opportunity to discuss various engineering challenges of smart grid design and operation, by focusing on advanced methods and practices for designing different components and their integration within the grid, and to provide a forum for researchers from academia and professionals from industry, as well as government regulators, to tackle these challenges and to discuss and exchange knowledge and best practices about design and implementation of Smart Grid.

e-Energy 2012: where energy, computing and communication meet

Call for Papers
Third International Conference on Future Energy Systems
May 9-11, 2012 -- Madrid, Spain

e-Energy is the conference on future energy systems, where energy, computing and communication meet. The first e-Energy conference was held in April 2010, in Passau (Germany), and the second took place in May/June 2011 at Columbia University, in New York City (USA).

e-Energy 2012 invites submission of two categories of paper: full papers and discussion papers. Full papers should be no longer than 10 pages and discussion papers should be no longer than 4 pages. All papers must present original theoretical and/or experimental research that has not been previously published, accepted for publication, or is not currently under review by another conference or journal. Submissions must be in PDF-format using the double-column ACM format given at http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates Further submission information can be accessed via http://events.networks.imdea.org/content/e-energy-2012/paper-submission Proceedings will be published by ACM and appear in the ACM library and IEEE Xplore (subject to agreement by ACM and the IEEE).

Full papers should include a detailed description of research either in progress or completed. A discussion paper describes innovative and novel ideas that have not yet been fully explored, but have the potential to influence the research community. A discussion paper could, for example, expose a new problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk existing work, report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose new evaluation methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of early-stage work and enticing but unproven ideas.

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications: Smart Grid Communications Series

The IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) has inaugurated a new series on communications for Smart Grid. “Smart Grid” refers to the modernization of the electric grid to enable more efficient generation, transmission, distribution, and usage of energy, resulting in sustainable energy production and consumption with reduced adverse effects on the environment and increased power reliability. While advances in renewable energy and network control are needed, advances in communication technologies, data fusion and mining, and scheduling and optimization are also crucial for realizing this vision. It is anticipated that many of the same communications technologies that have revolutionized our way of life in the past few decades will have direct applicability to Smart Grid, for example, the use of wireless communications in a single distribution network to collect and exchange information about quality, consumption, and pricing of electricity. While many off-the-shelf communications technologies can be deployed today in the Smart Grid, their use may lead to numerous inefficiencies, especially if energymanagement-specific features are not included in data compression and the data collection infrastructure. Moreover, allowing multiple distribution networks to operate side-by-side, interface to customer equipment, and share information in a secure and reliable fashion poses a number of difficult communications challenges that remain unanswered in the context of Smart Grid.

This series focuses on identifying the numerous communication challenges posed by the Smart Grid and exploring research avenues for addressing them. Original contributions that are unpublished and not currently under review by any other journal are solicited in relevant areas of Smart Grid communications including but not limited to the following:

• Physical and MAC layer protocols for Smart Grid applications
• Spectrum sharing, coexistence and interference mitigation in Smart Grid communications
• Network control for the power grid
• Smart Grid sensor data fusion and mining models
• Communications to support demand-response, load, and pricing management
• Smart Grid cyber-physical network modeling and performance analysis
• Measurement data from Smart Grid testbeds and field trials
• Architecture and network topology for Smart Grid applications
• Cyber and physical vulnerabilities and Smart Grid security

Prospective authors should prepare their submissions in accordance with the rules specified in the ‘Information for Authors’ section of the JSAC guidelines (http://www.jsac.ucsd.edu/Guidelines/info.html). Each submission will be reviewed by at least three experts and evaluated by an editorial board dedicated to the area of communications for Smart Grid. All manuscripts should be submitted in PDF format via email to Dr. Nada Golmie, nada.golmie@nist.gov. While manuscripts can be submitted at any time, they should be submitted according to the following timetable to be considered for the inaugural July 2012 issue:
